The Asian Lion

He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee. - Numbers 24:8

The symbol of the Lion has been closely associated with Israel, Judah, and - more specifically - Jerusalem. The Lion no longer exists in the wild in Israel, yet this symbol lives on as an emblem for Jerusalem and Israel.

For all of that, the Asian Lion has found survival to be an almost impossible challenge. Once found throughout Asia, the Middle East, and even Europe, it is now found in the wild only in the Gur forest area of India.

In Israel, during biblical times, the Lion lived in the Jordan River Valley, the plains (Arava), and in certain less densely populated areas of northern Israel. It became extinct in Israel in the twentieth century.
