The Griffon Vulture

There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not seen - Job 28:7

The Griffon Vulture is a native of Israel but is found throughout the Mediterranean and as far away as India, South Africa, and even as far north as Scandinavia. In Israel, it resides mostly in the Galilee, the Golan, and in the southern deserts, preferring cliffs over any other nesting area..

It is the most social of all vultures, travelling in flocks of as many as 50 at a time. And they don't mind travelling as much as 100 miles away per day in search of food. (And, it's quite an eater - it can eat almost its entire weight in one sitting!)

But, for all its capacity for food, the Griffon Vulture is in trouble. Their numbers are dwindling throughout Europe, Asia and Africa, and there are there are less than 100 breeding pairs left in Israel.

That's why we've undertaken a major captive breeding and reintroduction project to rebuild its dwindling population. The survival of this beautiful raptor is important part of the ecology of this region and we are dedicated to seeing it survive and flourish in the wild.

DID YOU KNOW:

That when feeding, vultures maintain a strict social order according to species, body size, and strength of beak?
